Training Needs Assessment

The RVPHTC conducts training needs assessments each year to inform training development. Approaches to these assessments range from reviews of secondary data like the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) and other sources, to primary collection of qualitative and quantitative input from our audiences.

Findings from the training needs assessments inform the development of trainings that address the strategic skill domains identified by the de Beaumont Foundation in their 2021 report, Adapting and Aligning Public Health Strategic Skills, as well as the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals.

Quantitative Needs Assessment

The RVPHTC administered a training needs assessment survey to Region V’s local health departments (LHDs) in Fall 2023. The dashboard below allows for users to interact with the findings of the training needs assessment. You can filter the data by state, urban/ rural, staff size, size of population served, and strategic skill domain. A narrative report of the methods and findings is available, along with an Excel file of summary tables.

Region V Statewide Reports (2021 PH WINS)

Our partners at the University of Minnesota Center for Public Health Systems have compiled summary reports uniquely featuring statewide combined results for local health departments (LHDs) and state health agencies (SHA) that participated in the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey. These reports provide information on demographics, training gaps, and familiarity with health equity concepts. Data is presented by setting (state, Region V LHDs, National LHDs, Region V SHAs, and National SHAs).

State-level reports are available for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. To request your state’s report, please email us at [email protected].
